UNKNOWN PLACES

Mexico is one of the world's most popular vacation destinations with over 20 million foreign visitors a year.

We will show you some amazing places that you can find if you visit Mexico

FIREFLY SANCTUARY

The monarch butterflies sanctuary in Michoacán is now world famous. But how about a place that shines at night under the firefly lights? There is such a place in Nanacamilpa (Tlaxcala). It is called the firefly sanctuary and it is sure to become a touristic attraction as famous as its butterflies cousin.

From June to August, the woods are covered by millions of these bugs creating a surreal landscape. Understandably, it is not possible to make photographs in the sanctuary. Besides, unless you have a great camera lens, your photos will look totally dark. It is one of those places you have to see to believe it.

MATACANES

One of the best places to do canyoning in the world, by far. It is a great wet canyon for those adventure junkies who love to jump over water, do some abseiling, swim in turqouise waters and enjoy nature at its finest.

Matacanes is a Spanish slang word to name the holes in the mountain through which water drills the rock helped by gravity until it reaches the river. They look like fantastic showers falling from the ceiling of small caves just by the river.

I have been to this place no less than 20 times and still it amazes me because of its beauty.

There is no way to find public transport to this site. However, it is close to Monterrey, an ideal base to adventure trips. Check this tour including Matacanes. Also consider Hidrofobia, its twin canyon.

TOLANTONGO

An eco-tourist park set in the cliffs of the dry highlands in Hidalgo state. Its wonderful pools receive water directly from the mountain and offer a great view of the mountains covered by cacti.

These pools are man-made, but feel like Turkey’s Pamukkale. Beside the pools there is a cave to explore, a river to swim, a suspension bridge over the gorge and a hotel. Try visiting during weekdays as it is very popular with locals during weekends.

There is no public transport to this place. It is located 115km (2,5hrs) away from Pachuca (the state capital) and 200km from Mexico City airport (about 3,5hrs).

LAS POZAS DE XILITLA

Huasteca Culture & Surreal Edward James Gardens of Xilitla trip is a great extension to any Mexico City visit, visiting a surreal world full of whimsical statues and lush jungles.

Embark on a three days fantastic journey that will take you to discover the Huasteca culture & “Las Pozas” (the Pools) of Xilitla, an extraordinary sculpture garden located over 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level, in a subtropical rainforest in the mountains of Mexico. Here you’ll discover spectacular fauna, lush flora and stunning landscapes among 80 acres, surrounded by beautiful rivers with cascading waterfalls and pools interlaced with towering Surrealist sculptures in concrete. With its origins dating back to late 40’s, “Las Pozas” was created by Edward James, the eccentric English poet and artist.

VOLCÁN PARICUTÍN

The church of San Juan is now a ghostly and abandoned ruin in the middle of nowhere. During the eruption, the lava flowed around and into the church, and covered 3/4 of the town. Just beneath the church, the old houses and buildings keep buried under the rocks.

Fortunately, no one died from the Parícutin volcano as all residents were evacuated before the villages were covered in lava. At the end of this phase, the volcano had grown 336 metres tall. For the next eight years the volcano would continue erupting, although this was dominated by relatively quiet eruptions of lava that would scorch the surrounding 25 km² of land.

Nowadays, the church buried by lava has become a tourist atraction and an important source for the economy of the region. Paricutin volcano is also included in many versions of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World lists.

BAJA WINE COUNTRY

The best under-the-radar wine region in the West is south of the border. Visit the wine playgrounds of Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California. With stunning vistas, designer hotels, state-of-the-art glamping sites, and Mexican-inspired cuisine, Valle de Guadalupe will invigorate your adventurous side and your taste buds. The region’s warm, dry climate is amenable to a variety of grapes, including reds like Zinfandel, Grenache, and Nebbiolo, and white varietals Viognier and Chenin Blanc. In this emergent wine Mecca you can diversify your palette and discover a different side of the West.

CUATRO CIÉNAGAS

The valley of Cuatrocienegas, in central Coahuila, Mexico has the greatest number of endemic species of any place in North America (Stein et al, 2000). With its high biodiversity and more than 70 endemic species, this approximately 1000 square km desert valley that lies about 270 km SSE of Big Bend National Park, Texas ranks near the Galapagos Islands in terms of the world's unique ecosystems. Much of its biotic diversity is associated with an incredibly diverse complex of thousands of geothermal springs, marshes, lakes and streams. Variation among springs in terms of discharge, water chemistry and temperature is extensive, and often extreme over very small spatial scales.

HIERVE EL AGUA

Hierve el Agua (Spanish for "the water boils") is set of natural rock formations in the Mexican state of Oaxaca that resemble cascades of water. This is due to the accumulation of minerals deposited by spring water that has flowed down the rocks over thousands of years.

It is one of two calcified waterfalls in the world. The other is in Pamukkale, Turkey.

Hierve el Agua was created by mineral water that pushed through karstic limestone, depositing the falls onto the mountain’s edge. While the waterfalls are white, two mineral pools sit at the edge of the cliff, full of calcium carbonate, magnesium, and just enough sulphur to lend them a yellow hue.

GRUTAS DE GARCÍA

Grutas de García (Garcia Caves) are located 9 kilometers outside the small town of García, Nuevo León in northern Mexico about 30 km from Monterrey. The caves are inside the famous mountain, El Fraile within the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. Cerro del Fraile reaches 1,080 meters above sea level and towers 750 meters over the main access road. The entrance to the caves is located on the side of Cerro del Fraile. The easiest way to reach the entrance to the caves is by taking a five-minute ride on the aerial tramway, but there is a steep path that can be taken to reach the caves.

PLAYA PUNTA COCOS

Located on the western edge of the island, Punta Coco is known as one of the best beaches on the island to witness the famed Isla Holbox sunsets.

Located on the island of Holbox, 1.3 miles south west of Downtown Holbox, You should think about stopping by regardless of whether you are staying in the vicinity. Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean's beaches are pretty busy for the most part, however, Punta Coco is tamer than most, which offers some middle ground to those who want to stay away from big crowds, but still get the most out of their beach visit.
